The Frederick Cooler Neighborhoods Project

How you can get involved!

The Frederick Cooler Neighborhoods Project will expand community understanding of the importance of trees for health, well-being, and economic opportunity.

To implement Recommendation 25 from the Climate Response and Resilience Report (Increase the county forest canopy by 10% over current levels), Mobilize Frederick received a grant from the Maryland Forest Service’s Community Forestry Catalyst Fund. With this funding, Mobilize Frederick will implement a pilot project focusing on expanding Frederick’s workforce development in priority census tracts. We will hire 18 people to plant 240 trees throughout 2025 and 2026, culminating in a strategic plan that aligns with the City of Frederick’s goal of achieving 40% tree canopy by 2030. This work will be supported by various community partners to support the project’s longevity.

Community Forums
We’ll host public meetings for interested community members to learn about the project and give feedback on our plans.

Trust Hubs
We’ll recruit individuals to serve as liaisons between us and the community, helping us open doors and solve problems.

Workforce Development
Part-time staff will be hired to conduct the pilot project, serve as a community resource, and help develop the strategic plan.

Strategic Planning
The project will wrap up with a strategic plan, intended to include multiple perspectives that will outline an ideal action plan for future tree planting projects.
